How My Dad and Brother Transformed Their Lives

When I was a kid my dad was a workaholic. He was stressed out most of the time. And, though we did go on family vacations twice a year, the rest of the time he spent hard at work. He’d come home from the office, eat dinner, and then go into his study where he’d review the day’s paperwork and numbers until he went to bed. He didn’t help with the dishes or household chores. He rarely spent time playing with us. His mind was mostly on the company (a family steel business) he was trying to run successfully. He was stubborn, and that caused some fights between us, but most of the time he just did his thing, and I relied on my mom to take care of me, entertain me, teach me, help me, and parent me. I have always been secretly amazed by people who willingly disclose the intense private details of their family life to the masses. The more personal the detail — the greater my surprise. There are those of course who engage in such activity simply for notoriety, the enjoyment of shock value or some other self-serving purposes (see Jerry Springer). Val Cole
Val spent the first 12 years of her career being so tired she can hardly remember any of it! Getting up at 3:30am for a top rated morning radio show in Southwestern Ontario, however, got her noticed which led to a job offer to host a morning show in Vancouver in 2000. Same brutal schedule, but no snow! By 2003, she’d had enough of the sleepless nights and moved to mid-days to host a fun and provocative radio talk show. Throughout her career she’s been seen doing the weather and hosting various TV shows as well as acting in movies, television series and commercials in Canada and the U.S.. When her daughter, Solana, came as a blessing in February 2009, Val took some important time off to stay at home with her and in early 2010, she and her husband Steve decided to move back to Ontario to be closer to family.
Now, she’s thrilled to be getting back to doing what she loves – talking to interesting people and learning new things!
